Day Seventy Two

Festis

The four of us were well awake this morning.

The sun was out, the sky was a faultless blue and the streets and sidewalks were beginning to melt so we were content.

Craig and Dugal did not notice, as they were still fast asleep.

Zita was off to her downtown office and Niamh was off to university as soon as they had breakfast.

Niamh had the car because she had to rush to her job at The Three Trees as soon as her class was over.

But she only stayed while they were very busy.

Then she went back to her university to finish her essay.

When Uncle Dugal was finally awake Furrgus and I went out to check the neighbourhood for nuisances.

Then went strolled to Kettleman’s and bought some takeaway bacon and eggs bagels for our breakfast with Uncle.

When Craig was finished his first coffee we broached him with a thorny issue.

Our dear friend Muskox desperately needed to change his name.

As his more famous namesake has turned out to be at best a lunatic.

And now friend Muskox is too embarrassed to go out in public.

Lest he be taken for a relative.

Well that is an intolerable situation, especially with all the Christmas parties abounding.

So after some lengthy research and discussion he has suggested that his Inuit name become his.

But we all wished to check with Craig, as it is a matter of family protocol.

But naturally he had no objection and confessed to being a bit ashamed he had not proactively addressed this months ago.

So by deed poll our friend is now Mister Umingmaq Esquire.

Just after this and very unexpectedly Cousin Morag phoned us on Dugal’s personal telephone.

It is so cold over there that she wanted to know if we could open the strategic coal supply to the town.

We agreed instantly, with the stipulation that it is to be free.

We would suggest opening the castle, but it is most certainly colder than the local homes.

And being cut off by the tides twice a day rather limits it as a solution. Such is life.

But we did suggest to Morag that on her next trip to Edinburgh she look into getting quotations on central heating.

To go along with the new roof and some doors for the west tower.

We have become rather spoilt having wind tight windows and doors, and even hot water whenever you want.

I am sure Morag thinks we have become hothouse flowers.

So I will take a strategic opportunity to remind her of the yearly bill from The Lanesborough.

For her regular excursions to annoy the Sassanachs.

While we were on our long afternoon patrol Mister Paul came for his weekly coffee and croissant visit.

We can always tell because of the croissant crumbs on the dining room table.

We were a bit disappointed that no presents were delivered today.

But fortunately Emmet’s birthday present for Niamh arrived late last night.

As tomorrow is the communal birthday.

Niamh will be twenty five and Emmet twenty nine. My goodness.

Dugal can even remember when each of them came home to the old house. Can you imagine that.

We have not been informed of any festive arrangements here about.

Perhaps a quarter century celebration is a bit much for Niamh.

Personally I can barely remember my seventieth, as we were stuck off the coasts of France in a raging gale.

Hardtack and brandy, that is what I recall.

Now Zita took Emmet’s birthday present over when she visited last month.

She also took presents for both birthday and Christmas for Doctor Alice.

Zita’s planning skills leave us quite humbled I tell you.

Our Niamh came home from her work to make her dinner, before she rushed off to the university again.

Because her essay has to be finished by midnight. Dear Lord. Another deadline.

So it was only Mr. And Mrs. T for dinner again.

Just as well, as we are well behind in the poker tournament and needed the table sooner rather than later.

But unfortunately Zita did not get home until quite late because of pressing conversations at work.

So she brought some baguettes and that with some of the chicken made a quick and tasty dinner.

But once again we have had to delay the ongoing poker tournament.

Due to lack of appropriate space.
