Furrgus
But upon peering out between the curtains we realized that the weather report had let us down again.
Tonight’s forecast snow was already here.
We gave a momentary thought to returning to sleep but Dugal had already put the bread in the toaster.
After a quick bite we assembled ourselves before venturing out.
Dugal and I having served in some Godawful places are well used to functioning under several layers.
Festis, whose career seemed to consist of sailing His Majesty’s ships to various sunny climes, takes forever to get ready.
Now the snow was not yet sufficiently deep to require snowshoes but boots were the order of the day, let me tell you.
As Dugal and I still had our cache of Sealskins waterproof socks we lent a couple of pairs to Fistis.
We took our time with our morning patrol.
As we did not wish to be standing around, noses pressed to the window, awaiting opening of the Wild Oat.
Even so I think we were the first to sit ourselves this morning.
But before we knew it omelettes and the extra fried potatoes were placed before us.
Dugal says it is because the waitresses have a soft spot for him.
I think it is because Festis is a handsome tipper.
When we got home both Zita, Niamh and the car were gone.
Niamh had taken the car because of the snow.
Especially since the university is somewhat lackadaisical in its snow clearing efforts.
Fortunately we had left the kitchen pristine when we went out.
Soon enough Craig was on his second espresso and was looking out the window with a certain lack of amusement.
I suspect the number of espressos is directly proportional to the amount of accumulating snow.
When we went on afternoon patrol it was still snowing, but that did not deter us from our duty, and then there was the smell of fresh doughnuts.
Thursdays are notable for the delivery of doughnuts to Little Victories.
This was sufficient motivation and we set forth.
Our diligence was rewarded as the doughnuts were especially scrumptious today.
And there was a lovely dog keeping any unwanted visitors at bay.
So we could really relax once we were inside.
We got home in the nick of time, as it started to rain. On top of the snow.
Now that is a dangerous combination let me tell you.
When Zita got home her coat was nearly soaked right through.
But after she had a bit of a relax, by looking out the windows with us, she made another delicious diner for Craig and herself.
Then it was time for our poker game and for them to watch a new mystery series.
So the day settled to a calm and quiet end.
We avoided looking out the windows.
